Google TISP Becomes Reality - Sort Of
Google TISP, or Toilet Internet Service Provider, was one of Google’s renowned April Fool’s Jokes. It claimed to run fiber optic cables through sewage systems in order to provide super-fast, super-convenient internet service to residents. One British town has taken this idea to the next level.
Instead of digging up ground or roads to install fiber optic cables, the town of Bournemouth, United Kingdom are laying the cables in the existing sewage systems. Not only does this reduce costs, but it puts the cables farther underground, meaning less risk of damage to the expensive system.
This little town is known for its older citizens, but will, no doubt, be attracting a new generation of people, seeing as how this new £30 million venture by H20 Networks, Ltd. will be bringing speeds close to 100mbps to the local camodes. Great for high-bandwidth tasks such as high-definition movies, downloading large files, etc, this new system will be a haven for the people sick of slow, iffy connections that are all too common around the UK.
Elfred Thomas, CEO of H20 Networks, said “This is just the start of bringing next generation connectivity to the UK.” The more than 360,000 miles of sewers in the United Kingdom could soon see fiber optic cables bringing ultra-high speed internet to citizens, who often complain that France has three different networks already offering 50-100mbps internet, albeit not through the sewers.

I so want to make a witty comment about users ringing the help lines complaining of “crappy performance”. But I’m more mature than that so I won’t
Running that fiber would be a really shitty job.
